9th Lord – Sir Humphrey Stafford, Lord Stafford of Southwick, is appointed Steward of the Duchy of Cornwall and Constable of Bristol.  He is made Keeper of Dartmoor and appointed a diplomat to Brittany.  He is created Earl of Devon.

11th Lord – Sir Edward Stafford (Order of the Bath) is made a Knight of the Garter.  He serves as a Captain in the force sent to quell a rebellion in Cornwall.  At the wedding of Arthur, Prince of Wales Sir Edward wears a gown worth £1,500 (over £1.5 million today).  He is appointed Lord High Constable for the day of King Henry VIII’s accession.  He serves as Lord High Steward at King Henry’s coronation.  Sir Edward serves as a Captain leading 500 men during King Henry VIII’s invasion of France.  Sir Edward is chosen as one of twelve challengers to joust against the King, but he refuses.  King Henry suspects him of treasonous activity, has him called to court and has him [placed in the Tower of London.  He is tried by 17 of his peers and beheaded.

17th Lord – William Howard is created Baron Stafford then Viscount Stafford.  He is sent to the Tower of London for complicity in the Papeish Plot, is convicted of treason and sentenced to be hung drawn and quartered but King Charles shows leniency and commutes his sentence to beheading.
