In 1086 the manor of HODCUTT or GREAT HODCUTT (Hodicote, Hedcote, Hudicott, Hoddecote) was held by Ralph de Mortimer, with Oidelard as his under-tenant. The overlordship remained with the Mortimers until the death of Edmund Mortimer Earl of March in 1425, when it passed to his nephew Richard afterwards Duke of York, whose widow Cicely is returned as overlord in 1487. On her death in 1497 it went to the Crown.
