In the year 1086 Hugh de Beauchamp held 5 hides of land in Houghton. This property later became broken into smaller holdings, and in these must be sought the origins of the manors of Dame Ellensbury, Brittons alias Groves, Flamwells and Houghton Grange. The overlordship of all these properties follows the same descent as the barony of Bedford (q.v.).
