A manor in White Waltham called WALTHAMS' MANOR or WALTHAMS' LANDS appears in the 15th century in the possession of Roger Waltham, who left three daughters and co-heirs, Lucy wife of Richard Rede, Alice wife of Robert Clare, and Agnes, who was unmarried. Alice Clare and her husband acquired the title deeds and remained in possession of the whole manor. Alice took as her second husband Thomas Bowyer, but Richard Clare, her son by her first husband, was holding the manor in 1513, when he conveyed it to Sir George Puttenham and others. It seems possible that this is the manor of White Waltham held in 1556 by William Lord Windsor, as the latter estate is called in 1618 the manor of Windsors or Walthams Place, although the more usual form of the second name is Waltham Place.
