In 1086 the manor of CHALGRAVE, extended at 8 hides 2/3 virgates, was held by Albert of Lorraine of the king in chief, but by 1168 the overlordship had passed to the barony of Bedford (q.v.). It was assigned to that portion of the honour which was inherited by the Mowbrays, and was attached to their manor of Melton Mowbray as late as 1615.
