In the reign of Edward the Confessor the property afterwards known as KNOTTING MANOR was held by Burret. By 1086 it had passed into the possession of the Bishop of Coutances and was assessed at 5 hides worth £4. The bishop held the manor for life only and on his death it reverted to the Crown, being later granted to the Ferrers family, Earls of Derby, of whom it was held as of their manor of Higham Ferrers (Northants) (q.v.). The manor continued to be held of Higham Ferrers, and is referred to as being so held in 1616.
