Become the 9th Baron and Baroness of Field Dalling
1st Baron – Hasculf de St James, a Norman, also had holdings in Saint-James and Saint-Hilaire-du-Harscouet.
3rd Baron – Roger, Earl of Hertford who had the nickname “the Good Earl” because of his numerous acts of piety. Roger receives a grant from King Henry II stating that he can keep all the lands he conquers in South Wales. He is summoned by Thomas Becket to do homage in his capacity as Steward of Tunbridge Castle. He refuses and states he holds the castle for the king NOT the church.
4th Baron – Field Dalling passes to Richard III Earl of Hertford. Richard married Amice 4th countess of Gloucester but the couple are ordered by the Pope to separate due to consanguinity (blood relatives). They comply but later convince the Pope to change his mind. Richard attends the coronation of King John. He sides with the rebel barons and plays a key role in negotiating the peace with the King and the content of Magna Carta. He is chosen to be one of the 25 sureties with his son Gilbert.
5th Baron – Gilbert fights at the Battle of Lincoln and is taken prisoner by William Marshal. He marries William’s daughter. Gilbert is present at the confirmation of Magna Carta by King Henry III.
6th Baron – Gilbert’s son Richard, who is sent to Scotland to bring the young King and Queen of Scotland before King Henry. He enters Edinburgh Castle disguised as a Roos Knight and gradually introduces his own men until he has a defensive position and gains access to the Queen. He takes control of the castle and escorts the King of Scotland to Northumberland where King Henry is waiting.
7th Baron – Richard is poisoned leaving a son and heir Gilbert who is known as the “Red Earl” due to his red hair and fiery temper. Gilbert is knight by the rebel leader Simon de Montford and given command of the central division of the Baronial Army at the Battle of Lewes. Gilbert later falls out with de Montford and changes sides. He commanded the second division at the Battle of Evesham. He is rewards with the title of Abergavenny. Gilbert is one of the first barons to swear fealty to Edward I (the Longshanks) and is given joint Guardianship of England in the king’s absences. Gilbert is married to Joan of Acre, a daughter of King Edward.
8th Baron – Gilbert is made Earl of Gloucester and Hertford. He fights in Scotland and is appointed Warden of Scotland and made Captain of the Northern Marches. Gilbert is appointed Guardian of the Realm while the king is in Scotland and France.
